Trump admin live updates: Trump departs G7 early, instructs national security team to be ready in Situation Room

President Donald Trump made headlines during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, when he stood next to Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom and displayed a trade agreement that had been signed with the U.K. However, things took a comedic turn when Trump accidentally dropped the document, attributing it to the windy conditions. To make matters worse, he misspoke, stating that the agreement was with the European Union instead of the United Kingdom.

The White House quickly clarified the error, confirming that the agreement Trump showed was indeed with the United Kingdom. When asked about the differences between this agreement and the one signed in the Oval Office back in May, the president nonchalantly replied, “Not much.”

As the document fluttered to the ground, Trump fumbled with his words, saying, “We just signed a document. This is not — sorry about that…” Prime Minister Starmer lightened the mood by chiming in with laughter, calling it “a very important document.”

Despite the mishap, Trump continued to praise the trade agreement, emphasizing its benefits for both the U.S. and the U.K. “A little windy out here. We just signed it and it’s done. And so, we have our trade agreement with the European Union, and it’s a fair deal for both. It’ll produce a lot of jobs, a lot of income. And we have many, many other ones coming,” he reiterated.

The White House provided further details on the US-UK agreement, particularly regarding steel and aluminum. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will determine a quota of products that can enter the U.S. without being subject to the 25% Section 232 tariff, a significant development in trade relations between the two countries.

In a final show of diplomacy, Trump praised Prime Minister Starmer for his leadership, stating, “The prime minister’s done a great job. I want to just tell that to the people of the United Kingdom, he’s done a very, very good job.”

The encounter between President Trump and Prime Minister Starmer may have had its share of mishaps, but it ultimately showcased the ongoing efforts to strengthen trade relations between the United States and the United Kingdom. Despite the occasional slip-up, both leaders remain committed to fostering a prosperous economic partnership for the benefit of their respective nations.
