Trump administration announces pause on asylum decisions after National Guardsmen shooting
The recent shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. has prompted the Trump administration to take action. In response to this tragic event, all asylum decisions have been temporarily paused. This decision was announced by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow, who stated that the pause is necessary to ensure that every individual seeking asylum is thoroughly vetted and screened.
President Donald Trump also made headlines by announcing a “permanent pause” on migration from certain countries, specifically referring to “Third World Countries.” Additionally, the State Department has halted the issuance of visas for travelers holding Afghan passports. This move was supported by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized the importance of prioritizing national security.
In a previous proclamation issued by Trump in June, travel bans were imposed on 12 countries, predominantly in Africa and the Middle East. The specifics of the recent immigration restrictions have not been fully disclosed, but Trump’s administration is committed to implementing various measures to enhance national security.
The suspect in the shooting incident, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, entered the U.S. in 2021 during the Biden administration and was granted asylum in April 2025 under the Trump administration. Lakanwal had previously worked with the Zero Unit in Afghanistan, collaborating with the CIA and the Joint Special Operations Command on counterterrorism missions. This background has raised concerns about the vetting process for asylum seekers and potential security risks.
Trump has vowed to crack down on immigration following the shooting, emphasizing the need to address national security threats. Critics, however, have raised objections to the administration’s immigration policies, arguing that they unfairly target vulnerable populations and fail to address the root causes of security threats.
The deployment of National Guard troops to Washington and other cities under Democratic leadership highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration and national security policies. As the debate continues, it remains crucial to strike a balance between protecting national interests and upholding humanitarian values.
