Trump administration freezes $339 million in UCLA grants, accuses school of rights violations
The Trump administration has taken a bold step by freezing $339 million in research grants to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) over allegations of civil rights violations. The accusations include antisemitism, affirmative action, and discrimination against women in sports.
This move marks a rare instance where a public university has been targeted by the federal government in such a manner. The freeze affects grants from various federal agencies, including $240 million from the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health.
The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division recently found that UCLA violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The university was accused of creating a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students through deliberate indifference.
Following a similar case with Columbia University, which resulted in a $200 million settlement and the restoration of research grants, the Trump administration plans to use this as a template for dealing with other universities. Financial penalties have now become an expectation for institutions found in violation of civil rights.
The National Science Foundation has suspended funding to UCLA, citing misalignment with the agency’s priorities. UCLA’s chancellor, Julio Frenk, expressed deep disappointment at the government’s decision, highlighting the potential impact on researchers, faculty, and staff at the university.
The Department of Energy also found instances of noncompliance at UCLA, such as requesting applicants to disclose their race in personal statements and considering factors like family income and ZIP code in admissions. Affirmative action in college admissions has been a contentious issue, with California outlawing it in 1996 and the Supreme Court striking it down in 2023.
The federal government’s letter to UCLA raised concerns about race-based admissions practices and discrimination against certain groups of applicants. Additionally, UCLA was accused of failing to address antisemitism and allowing transgender women to compete on women’s sports teams.
Despite the allegations, UCLA recently settled a lawsuit with Jewish students and a professor for $6 million. The lawsuit claimed that the university violated their civil rights by allowing pro-Palestinian protesters to block their access to campus facilities. UCLA has reiterated its commitment to campus safety and inclusivity, pledging to implement recommendations to address these issues.
