Trump appoints Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as top prosecutor in DC
President Donald Trump has made a bold decision to appoint Fox News host and former prosecutor Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. This announcement was made on Truth Social, a platform launched by Trump himself.
The choice of Pirro comes after Trump revealed that Ed Martin, who was serving as the temporary top prosecutor in D.C., would not be taking on the position permanently due to a loss of support among key Republicans in the Senate. ABC News had previously reported that Trump had his eye on Pirro for the role.
Pirro has a long history of supporting Trump, dating back to her days as a prominent prosecutor in New York. She was an early advocate for Trump during his 2016 campaign and stood by him during the controversial “Access Hollywood” tape scandal.
However, Pirro has faced scrutiny for pushing false claims of election fraud following Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. She was also embroiled in the Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit for broadcasting inaccurate information about the company. Fox News ultimately settled the lawsuit for $787.5 million and admitted to spreading false statements.
In addition, Pirro faced controversy in 2019 when she was suspended by Fox News for questioning the loyalty of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to the U.S. Constitution based on Omar’s Muslim faith.
As for Martin, who had been vying for the permanent U.S. attorney position in D.C., he has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s “Stop the Steal” campaign and was present at the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 attack. Despite not securing the top prosecutor role, Trump mentioned that Martin could potentially serve in another capacity within the Department of Justice.
Interestingly, one of Trump’s last acts before leaving office in 2021 was granting a pardon to Pirro’s ex-husband, Albert Pirro. Albert had been convicted on multiple counts of conspiracy and tax evasion for improperly deducting over $1 million in personal expenses for his businesses.
Overall, the appointment of Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia is sure to generate significant attention and controversy given her close ties to Trump and her history of controversial statements and actions.
