Trump calls for Republicans to vote to release Epstein files

President Donald Trump has made a surprising move by calling on House Republicans to vote in favor of releasing the full Justice Department files related to Jeffrey Epstein ahead of the upcoming vote. This marks a significant shift in his previous stance on the matter.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged House Republicans to support the release of the Epstein files, stating that there is nothing to hide. This statement comes after efforts by Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson to prevent the vote from taking place.

Despite these efforts, the discharge petition to release the files garnered enough support, with four Republicans joining Democrats to reach the required number of signatures. Rep. Thomas Massie, the lead Republican co-sponsor of the bill, expects strong GOP support for the measure.

Massie emphasized the choice facing lawmakers between protecting the president politically and meeting the expectations of their constituents. He warned that a vote against transparency could have long-lasting consequences beyond Trump’s presidency.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the released emails related to Epstein as a Democratic “hoax” that proved Trump’s innocence. None of the previously publicized documents implicated Trump in any wrongdoing.

If the measure passes the House, it will face another challenge in the Senate and potentially a veto from Trump. The public clash between Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene highlights divisions within the MAGA base and hints at a post-Trump iteration of the movement.

Greene has positioned herself as a more authentic advocate of “America First” ideology, criticizing Trump on various issues such as foreign affairs, bailout of Argentina’s economy, H-1B visas, and healthcare. She suggested that Trump no longer fully represents the priorities of the MAGA movement.

Greene’s push for the release of the Epstein files appears to have been a breaking point in her relationship with Trump. This clash underscores deeper divisions within the Republican Party and raises questions about the future direction of the MAGA movement.
