Trump directs Pentagon to prepare options to use against drug cartels designated terrorist organizations

President Donald Trump has recently directed the Pentagon to explore options for utilizing U.S. military force against drug cartels that have been designated as terrorist organizations. While this directive has been confirmed by two U.S. officials, it is important to note that any potential use of military assets is not currently imminent.

The specifics of what this authorization entails and what military operations may be considered as viable options for the U.S. military to prepare remain unclear. There are expected to be significant questions surrounding the legality of such operations and the potential implications they may have.

The New York Times was the first to report on Trump’s signing of a directive instructing the Pentagon to ready military options against the cartels. The Pentagon has deferred all inquiries to the White House for further clarification on this matter.

In response to inquiries, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly emphasized that President Trump’s primary focus is on safeguarding the homeland. This led to the decision to designate multiple cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations, reflecting the administration’s commitment to national security.

However, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has dismissed the notion of U.S. military intervention against drug cartels within Mexican territory. She emphasized that while cooperation and coordination between the two countries are essential, the prospect of a military invasion is not on the table.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration classified several cartels, including Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel, and MS-13, as global terrorist organizations through an executive order. This designation enables the administration to employ a range of measures against these cartels, which Secretary of State Marco Rubio likened to armed terrorist groups controlling territories.

Rubio highlighted the necessity of treating these cartels as armed terrorist organizations rather than merely drug trafficking entities. By reevaluating their status and employing various elements of American power such as intelligence agencies and the Department of Defense, the administration aims to target these groups effectively.

The ongoing efforts to combat drug cartels and their illicit activities underscore the administration’s commitment to enhancing national security and addressing transnational criminal threats. As developments unfold, it will be crucial to monitor how these initiatives evolve and the impact they have on combating drug-related violence and criminal activities.
