Trump fires commissioner of labor statistics after weaker-than-expected jobs figures slam markets
President Donald Trump made headlines on Friday by firing the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner shortly after the agency released a report showing a significant slowdown in job growth in the U.S.
In a provocative Truth Social post, Trump not only criticized BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer but also took aim at Fed Chair Jerome Powell, accusing McEntarfer of manipulating job data for political gain.
Trump’s statement on Truth Social read, “I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s [Harris’] chances of Victory.”
Following McEntarfer’s termination, Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will serve as Acting Commissioner for BLS, according to a spokesperson for the bureau.
The controversial move came on the same day that the BLS reported a meager gain of 73,000 nonfarm jobs in July, falling below market expectations and leading to a significant downward revision of the previous months’ data.
Trump’s decision to dismiss McEntarfer sparked criticism from various quarters, including William Beach, a former Trump appointee at BLS, who condemned the firing as “groundless” and detrimental to the bureau’s statistical mission.
Despite the weak jobs report, Trump continued to tout the strength of the labor market, while also launching scathing attacks on Powell and the Fed’s handling of interest rates.
The fallout from Trump’s actions was felt in the financial markets, with stocks plummeting and treasury yields experiencing a sharp decline.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the integrity of economic data reporting and the independence of federal statistical agencies remain under scrutiny.

Overall, Trump’s decision to fire McEntarfer has raised concerns about the politicization of economic data and the potential implications for the credibility of key government agencies.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the Trump administration’s actions will impact future reports on employment, consumer prices, and other economic indicators.
