Trump received 18 written offers from countries on trade, won’t allow ‘rushed deals,’ top econ adviser says

The Trump administration is making significant progress on trade negotiations, with 18 “written offers” from foreign trade ministers received this week alone. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett emphasized that these deals are carefully considered and won’t be rushed into.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has also scheduled 14 meetings this week with foreign trade representatives to discuss potential deals. This comes after President Trump announced a 90-day pause on “Liberation Day” tariffs, with certain tariffs remaining in place. China, in particular, faced additional retaliatory tariffs.

If agreements aren’t reached by July 8, countries could face higher tariff rates. Hassett highlighted the administration’s focus on quick deals with various countries, bypassing the need for congressional approval. He mentioned progress with India, previously a “worst offender” in trade against the US.

Despite concerns about potential backlash from consumers, Hassett remained optimistic about the negotiations. He noted that Trump would personally announce any breakthroughs in trade talks. Overall, the administration is confident in its approach and the impact it will have on American workers.
