Trump says China tariffs being reduced after ‘amazing’ Xi meeting

President Donald Trump has announced a reduction in tariffs on Chinese imports following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. The decision to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods related to fentanyl from 20% to 10% is a result of China’s commitment to cracking down on the flow of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid responsible for many overdose deaths in the United States.

During the meeting, Trump and Xi also reached an agreement on rare earth minerals, essential for producing computer chips. The one-year deal ensures that China will not impose drastic restrictions on rare earth minerals, thereby averting the threat of additional tariffs on Chinese imports.

In addition to these agreements, Trump stated that China would start purchasing U.S. soybeans immediately, a move that will benefit American farmers who have been impacted by the trade war between the two countries. The leaders also discussed the potential purchase of American products by China, including computer chips from U.S. chipmaker Nvidia.

Despite the productive discussions on trade and economic issues, some sensitive topics were not addressed during the meeting. Taiwan, a contentious issue between China and the United States, was not brought up. However, Trump mentioned that Russia’s war in Ukraine was extensively discussed, with both leaders agreeing to collaborate on resolving the conflict.

The issue of nuclear testing was also touched upon, with Trump clarifying that his earlier announcement regarding the resumption of U.S. nuclear testing was not directed at China. Instead, it was aimed at other countries engaged in nuclear testing activities. Trump emphasized the importance of denuclearization and de-escalation efforts, suggesting that Russia and China could be included in future discussions on nuclear disarmament.

Overall, the meeting between Trump and Xi was described as “amazing” by the U.S. president, who praised Xi as a great leader. The agreements reached during the meeting are expected to have a significant impact on trade relations between the two countries. The leaders also discussed plans for future visits, with Trump scheduled to visit China in April and Xi planning to visit the U.S. thereafter.
