Trump says ‘extremely hard’ to make a deal with China’s President Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump recently expressed his frustration with negotiating a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that it was “extremely hard” to reach an agreement. This comes at a time when tensions between the two countries have been escalating, with trade talks appearing to be at a standstill.
Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, mentioned that trade discussions were “a bit stalled,” indicating that the leaders of both nations would likely need to intervene to make progress. Despite reports suggesting that Trump and Xi could potentially speak this week, it remains uncertain whether such a call has been scheduled.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged his admiration for President Xi but emphasized the challenges of reaching a deal with him, describing him as “VERY TOUGH.” The ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China stems from accusations of violating a trade agreement established in Switzerland in May, which included a temporary suspension of tariffs and a rollback of trade measures imposed by China.
One of the key points of contention is China’s reluctance to lift restrictions on rare earth exports, as well as the U.S.’s efforts to limit China’s access to advanced technology. Additionally, the Trump administration recently announced plans to revoke visas for Chinese students, further straining relations between the two countries.
Despite the tensions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue during a meeting with the new U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue. The Chinese authorities urged the U.S. to meet them halfway and work towards improving bilateral relations.
Analysts speculate that a potential phone call between Trump and Xi could be on the horizon, with Beijing signaling its willingness to engage in discussions. However, China is likely to proceed cautiously to avoid any unexpected developments during the call.
In a post on X, the U.S. ambassador reiterated the importance of addressing key issues such as trade, fentanyl, and illegal immigration, emphasizing the need for ongoing communication between the two countries.
As the trade tensions persist, both the U.S. and China are navigating a delicate diplomatic dance to find common ground and prevent further escalation of conflict. The outcome of any potential discussions between Trump and Xi could have far-reaching implications for the global economy and geopolitical landscape.
