Trump says he is appointing Lindsey Halligan, one of his former attorneys, to lead key prosecutor’s office

President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Lindsey Halligan, a former defense attorney, to lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Halligan, who currently serves in the White House staff secretary’s office, previously represented Trump during an investigation into classified documents.

In a series of social media posts, Trump emphasized the need for a “tough prosecutor” in the Eastern District of Virginia to expedite legal proceedings. He praised Halligan as a fair and smart individual who will deliver justice for all. This announcement followed the resignation of Erik Siebert, the previous head of the office, amid pressure to pursue criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Despite Halligan lacking prosecutorial experience, she is licensed to practice law in Florida and has worked on insurance claims. During her tenure in the White House, Trump assigned her to address what the administration considers radical ideologies at Smithsonian Institution museums.

Trump lauded Halligan’s loyalty and legal expertise, citing her involvement in defending his rights during legal disputes. The decision to appoint Halligan came shortly after Trump criticized U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi over the pace of investigations into his political adversaries.

Siebert’s departure was rumored after investigators failed to find evidence of mortgage fraud against James, despite pressure from Trump officials. The former interim U.S. attorney faced scrutiny due to support from Virginia’s Democratic senators during his nomination process.

In response to questions about Siebert, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with his appointment, citing political affiliations as a factor. Maggie Cleary, a recent addition to the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, was named as the acting head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia.

The developments surrounding the leadership of the federal prosecutor’s office in Virginia underscore the intersection of politics and law enforcement in the current administration. Halligan’s appointment signals a shift in priorities and strategies within the justice system, reflecting Trump’s ongoing efforts to assert control over legal proceedings.
