Trump says he’s “terminating all discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately”

President Trump made a bold statement on Truth Social, announcing the termination of all trade discussions with Canada following the implementation of a digital services tax on large technology companies. The president expressed his displeasure with Canada’s decision to levy tariffs on American farmers and impose a tax on American tech giants, calling it a direct attack on the United States.

In response to Canada’s digital services tax, which targets companies like Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Uber, the U.S. is preparing to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. The retroactive tax bill is expected to cost American companies $2 billion, further escalating tensions between the two nations.

This trade dispute comes on the heels of a meeting between President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Group of Seven economic summit in Alberta. Despite the breakdown in trade talks, Prime Minister Carney remains committed to negotiating in the best interests of Canadians, emphasizing the importance of ongoing discussions.

Candace Laing, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged the challenges in trade negotiations but expressed optimism for progress moving forward. With deadlines looming and unexpected developments, Laing emphasized the need for continued dialogue to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
