Trump says he’s terminating trade talks with Canada over TV ad about tariffs

President Donald Trump made a bold statement today, announcing the termination of trade negotiations with Canada. The reason cited for this drastic decision was a negative TV advertisement produced by the Canadian province of Ontario. This advertisement featured excerpts from a 1987 address by former President Ronald Reagan, in which he discussed the risks of high tariffs and the potential for a trade war.

In a social media post, Trump emphasized the importance of tariffs for national security and the economy of the United States. He declared, “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.” This move came as a surprise to many, as just earlier this month, Trump had expressed optimism about the progress of trade negotiations with Canada during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute issued a statement accusing the Canadian ad campaign of using selective audio and video of Reagan to misrepresent his views on tariffs. Trump echoed this sentiment, claiming that the ad was an attempt to interfere with the decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts.

The Supreme Court is currently considering the legality of Trump’s global reciprocal tariffs and whether the billions of dollars collected through these tariffs must be refunded. This decision could have significant implications for the future of trade relations between the United States and Canada.

In July, Trump imposed a 35% tariff on most goods and raw materials from Canada, further complicating the trade relationship between the two countries. The termination of trade negotiations marks a significant escalation in tensions between the United States and Canada, raising concerns about the future of trade between the two nations.
