Trump says Netflix deal to buy Warner Bros. ‘could be a problem’
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press
President Donald Trump expressed concerns about the deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, citing the potential market share dominance of the combined entity. During the Kennedy Center Honors event, Trump stated that the $72 billion deal would require federal approval, and he intends to be involved in the decision-making process.
If approved, the merger would bring together two major streaming services and combine Warner’s television and motion picture division, including DC Studios, with Netflix’s extensive content library and production capabilities.
Trump acknowledged Netflix’s success and praised CEO Ted Sarandos, but emphasized the significance of the increased market share resulting from the acquisition of Warner Bros. He questioned whether such a merger should be allowed, highlighting the potential implications for competition in the entertainment industry.
Despite meeting with Sarandos prior to the deal announcement, Trump indicated that there were no guarantees regarding the merger’s outcome. He recognized Sarandos as a talented individual who has made significant contributions to the film industry.
Trump reiterated his concerns about the potential market dominance of the merged entity and emphasized the need for a thorough review of the deal. The impact of this acquisition on competition and consumer choice in the entertainment sector remains a key consideration.
