Trump says Russia and Ukraine are ‘maybe very close’ to peace deal after Zelenskyy meeting

President Donald Trump recently announced that progress is being made towards achieving a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia after a series of discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida. Trump expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, stating that teams are “getting a lot closer, maybe very close” to reaching a resolution.

During the meetings, Trump highlighted that around 95% of the issues necessary to end the conflict have been addressed. Zelenskyy also acknowledged the advancements made, mentioning a 20-point peace plan with 90% agreement, as well as discussions on security guarantees and a prosperity plan. Both leaders emphasized the importance of security guarantees as a key milestone in achieving lasting peace.

One of the primary challenges in the negotiations revolves around territory, particularly the control of the Donbas region. Trump acknowledged the complexity of this issue, noting that discussions around territory swaps and demilitarized zones are ongoing. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s clear position on territorial control, emphasizing the need to respect their laws and people’s wishes.

Another crucial point of contention is the possibility of a ceasefire, allowing for a referendum on parts of the peace deal. Trump indicated that finding a solution to this issue remains a priority in the negotiations. Despite recent drone strikes by Russia in Ukraine, both leaders expressed a commitment to ending the conflict, with Trump affirming Putin’s seriousness in seeking peace.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy and Trump confirmed that negotiations will continue in the coming weeks. Trump suggested that a peace settlement could be reached in a few weeks if negotiations progress positively. However, he also acknowledged the challenges in reaching a breakthrough. The U.S. delegation involved in the talks included key officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, underscoring the importance of these discussions in achieving a peaceful resolution.

In conclusion, the efforts towards a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia are ongoing, with both sides committed to finding a resolution to the conflict. The negotiations are complex and challenging, but there is hope for a positive outcome in the near future.
