Trump signs controversial spending bill during White House 4th of July celebrations
President Donald Trump marked the White House’s Fourth of July celebrations by signing a sweeping spending bill that will bring significant changes to government benefits like Medicaid and increase funding for immigration enforcement. The bill, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” includes the largest tax cut in American history, as well as substantial spending cuts totaling $1.7 trillion.
During the White House’s military family picnic on Friday evening, President Trump touted the bill’s provisions, including a child tax credit and measures to combat waste, fraud, and abuse. He emphasized the positive impact of the bill on the country’s economy and urged Congress to pass it by July 4th.
As part of the Fourth of July festivities, the White House hosted flyovers, including one featuring B-2 bombers. While originally planned to coincide with the bill signing, the flyover took place before the signing ceremony. President Trump praised the military’s achievements, highlighting their success in a recent Iranian bombing mission and criticizing the previous administration.
However, Democrats criticized the bill’s supporters over its cuts to services for the most vulnerable Americans. The bill imposes work requirements for Medicaid, potentially leaving millions uninsured, and includes cuts that could lead to closures of health centers in rural areas. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered an eight-hour, 44-minute speech denouncing the bill, aiming to educate the public on its negative effects.
President Trump dismissed the Democrats’ criticisms, labeling them a “con job” and assuring the public that the bill would benefit all Americans. He refuted claims of danger, asserting that the bill would ultimately improve the lives of the American people. Despite the opposition, the bill was signed into law, marking a significant milestone in the administration’s legislative agenda.
