Trump slaps 25% tariffs on any countries that do business with Iran
President Trump announced on Monday that he is imposing a 25% tariff on goods from all countries that do business with Iran. This decision comes as the Trump administration increases pressure on the Iranian government amidst widespread anti-regime protests. The new tariffs, as stated by Mr. Trump on Truth Social, will apply to any business conducted with the United States of America and will take immediate effect.
The specifics of which countries will be affected by these tariffs remain unclear. However, Iran conducts significant amounts of business with China, one of the largest trading partners of the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, a key ally in the Gulf region. China, the largest importer of Iranian goods, imported around $22.4 billion worth of goods from Iran in 2022. Despite strict U.S. sanctions aimed at restricting Iran’s petroleum industry, China continues to secretly import Iranian oil. Additionally, China is the U.S.’s third-largest trading partner, with Americans purchasing $438.9 billion worth of Chinese goods in 2024.
On the other hand, Iran imported approximately $18 billion in goods from the United Arab Emirates, a crucial security partner for the U.S. in the region, hosting thousands of American forces. Due to years of sanctions on Iran related to its nuclear program, there is minimal trade between Iran and the U.S. However, the imposition of sanctions on countries doing business with Iran signifies a new effort to isolate Iran from the global economy.
These new tariffs come at a time when Iran is experiencing its largest wave of protests in years, driven in part by the country’s deteriorating economy. The protests have resulted in more than 500 reported deaths, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. President Trump has vowed to intervene if Iran’s regime escalates its crackdown on protesters and has been briefed on potential military strike options in Iran.
“The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options,” President Trump stated to reporters on Sunday evening. “We’ll make a determination.”
The situation in Iran remains tense, with the U.S. government closely monitoring developments and considering various courses of action in response to the ongoing protests and political turmoil.
