Trump threatens to ratchet up tariffs on EU if it fails to invest $600B in US

President Trump has issued a stern warning to the European Union, stating that if the bloc fails to fulfill its commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States, he will increase tariffs against them. This comes after Trump and the EU recently announced a preliminary trade deal, which included a 15% tariff on most imports from the EU and a pledge from Europe to invest $600 billion in the US and purchase $750 billion worth of American energy.

In an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Trump emphasized that if the EU does not follow through on their promise, they will face tariffs of 35%. The president highlighted that the reduction of tariffs from 30% to 15% was a result of the $600 billion investment commitment from the EU, which he referred to as a gift. He emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it allows the US to invest in anything of their choosing.

Despite the announcement of the trade deal, both the US and EU have provided limited details on how the $600 billion investment commitment will be implemented. When pressed for specifics, Trump reiterated that the purpose of the investment was for the EU to make amends for years of unfair trade practices.

Trump’s stance on tariffs and trade deals with the EU reflects his administration’s focus on rebalancing trade relationships and holding trading partners accountable. The president’s ultimatum to the EU underscores the importance of fulfilling commitments in the realm of international trade.
