Trump to hold news conference on crime in DC after threatening federal takeover

President Donald Trump has announced plans to hold a news conference on Monday with the aim of curbing violent crime in Washington, D.C. The president took to social media to promote the event, stating that it will also address the cleanliness and overall physical condition of the nation’s capital.

In a series of posts, Trump expressed his concern over the presence of homeless encampments in D.C. He called on the homeless population to vacate the city immediately, offering alternative accommodations away from the capital. Additionally, he made it clear that criminals would face legal repercussions and be placed in jail.

This news conference follows Trump’s recent executive order to enhance law enforcement efforts in Washington, D.C. The order, signed in March, aims to make the District of Columbia safe and beautiful. Despite the president’s claims, preliminary data from Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department indicates a decrease in overall crime rates, with violent crime down by 26% and property crime reduced by 5% compared to last year.

A White House official stated that the law enforcement initiative represents a holistic approach to improving public safety in the city. The operation will focus on high-traffic tourist areas and known hotspots, with federal officers being easily identifiable and prominently visible.

Trump criticized D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for what he perceives as a failure to effectively address crime rates in the city. Bowser, however, defended her administration’s efforts, citing a significant decline in violent crime over the past two years.

The president’s rhetoric intensified as he described Washington, D.C. as one of the most dangerous cities globally, threatening to deploy the National Guard and even suggesting a federal takeover. These statements came in response to a recent incident where a former government employee was assaulted during a carjacking intervention.

Trump emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the city, expressing a desire to eradicate crime and enhance its aesthetic appeal. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety of D.C. residents and visitors.

The upcoming law enforcement operation, led by the U.S. Park Police, will involve collaboration with various agencies, including the Metro Transit Police Department, FBI, and U.S. Marshals Service, among others. The aim is to create a secure environment for all individuals in Washington, D.C., reinforcing the city’s reputation as a vibrant and welcoming destination.
