Trump to sue New York Times for $15 billion, alleging defamation and libel

Jonathan Ernst | Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday his plans to file a $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of defamation and libel. He referred to the publication as a “mouthpiece” for the Democratic party.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized The New York Times for spreading false information about him, his family, and business, without providing specific details about the allegations.

Trump revealed that the lawsuit would be filed in the state of Florida, but did not offer further information.

Earlier, Trump had threatened legal action against The New York Times for its coverage of a sexually suggestive note linked to Jeffrey Epstein, which allegedly bore Trump’s signature. The White House denied any involvement by Trump in the note’s creation, labeling it as a fabrication.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

“The New York Times has been spreading lies, smears, and defamation against me for too long, and that ends now!” Trump declared.

He also mentioned ongoing lawsuits against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos, as well as Paramount for their 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
