Trump to unveil TrumpRx website he says will help Americans buy lower-priced prescription drugs
President Donald Trump is set to launch his new TrumpRx website during an event at the White House on Thursday night. The website, described as state-of-the-art by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, aims to provide American consumers with the opportunity to purchase low-cost prescription drugs.
Joining Trump for the announcement at 7 p.m. ET will be Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz and National Design Studio Director Joe Gebbia. The website is part of Trump’s administration’s efforts to make prescription drugs more affordable for Americans.
In September, Trump first mentioned the administration’s goal of creating the website when Pfizer agreed to lower prices for prescription drugs offered through Medicaid. This initiative is part of the administration’s “most favored nation” push to pressure companies to charge U.S. patients the same rate as they do in other countries.
In November, Trump announced deals with Ely Lilly and Novo Nordisk to offer some of their weight loss drugs at a lower price through TrumpRx. The companies voluntarily lowered prices before the website’s launch.
Dr. Oz explained that the TrumpRx website will connect consumers to pharmaceutical websites, allowing them to pay the lowest cash price without insurance. Similar third-party companies, like Good RX, also help consumers find the cheapest prices for medication using cash prices or coupons.
The website does not sell drugs but provides transparency into drug costs. Any company selling drugs can list their products on the site, allowing consumers to compare prices and make purchases directly from the seller.
Trump recently released his “Great Healthcare Plan,” calling on Congress to codify the “most favored nation” initiative. The plan includes proposals to send money directly to Americans to buy health insurance, increase price transparency, and hold insurance companies accountable.
Health care costs remain a top concern for Americans, with polls showing that two-thirds of adults worry about affording health care for themselves and their families. The majority of Americans expect health care costs to become less affordable in the coming year.
Overall, the TrumpRx website aims to provide a solution to rising prescription drug costs and improve access to affordable medications for all Americans.
