Trump transportation chief Sean Duffy accuses MTA of ‘runaround’ on subway crime

The New York City subway system is facing a crisis as crime rates soar, prompting Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to criticize the MTA for giving the federal government the “runaround” in addressing the issue. Felony assaults have increased by 19% this year and a staggering 66% since 2019, according to recent reports.

Duffy expressed his concerns over the safety of commuters and the need for the MTA to provide information on their security strategies and protocols. He emphasized the urgency of restoring order in the transit system to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent further incidents.

The Department of Transportation has been pressing the MTA for timely reporting of safety incidents, as required by federal regulations. The MTA has been criticized for being late in submitting reports, with 79% of major incident reports being delayed by an average of 36.5 days.

In response to the DOT’s demands for data on transit worker assaults, fare evasion, criminal activity, and safety measures, the MTA has defended its record, stating that subway crime is actually down and ridership is up. The MTA’s chief of policy and external relations, John McCarthy, dismissed Duffy’s claims and urged him to consider the facts.

Meanwhile, tensions between Duffy and the MTA have also escalated over the issue of congestion pricing, a program that charges drivers a toll to enter Manhattan below 60th Street. Duffy has called for the suspension of the toll, but the MTA and Governor Kathy Hochul have stood firm in their support of the program, citing its success in reducing traffic and generating revenue for the transit system.

Despite the MTA’s legal battles with the Trump administration and ongoing disputes with the federal government over congestion pricing, the focus remains on improving safety and security in the New York City subway system. While the MTA and federal authorities continue to clash over policy and funding issues, the ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of all commuters in the city.
