Trump Voter Says Wife Was Detained Over $25 Bad Check
Jim Brown, the husband of an Irish green card-holder in immigrant detention, is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda after voting for Trump in the last election. Brown expressed disbelief at the situation, stating that it should not be allowed in the country. His wife, Donna Hughes-Brown, an Irish citizen who moved to the U.S. at a young age, has been detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for over 30 days and faces deportation.
Hughes-Brown was detained in Chicago after landing from a family funeral in Ireland due to a $25 bad check she wrote a decade ago. Despite paying it back and serving probation, the government argues that her offense involves moral turpitude. Brown believes this is a blanket measure to fill detention beds and disagrees with the government’s actions.
Brown has reached out to various Republican representatives, including Eric Schmitt and Josh Hawley, as well as ICE and the White House, but has not received a response. He emphasized the need for someone to stand up against the injustice and regretted his vote for Trump in the last election. A GoFundMe has been set up to support Hughes-Brown’s legal fees, highlighting the couple’s involvement in community service and volunteer work.
But that’s not what he’s doing,” Brown said.
