Trump’s Deportations — And Detentions — Are Incredibly Unpopular
President Donald Trump’s stance on immigration, once a cornerstone of his platform, has seen a significant decline in approval due to his administration’s harsh policies. Recent polls conducted by CBS News/YouGov and CNN/SSRS show a growing disapproval of his approach, with 56% and 58% of U.S. adults, respectively, expressing dissatisfaction.
The public backlash stems from reports of appalling conditions in immigration detention centers and increased scrutiny of Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics, including brutal raids and targeting of non-criminal undocumented immigrants. Trump’s support for deportations has also waned, with 51% of Americans now disapproving.
Furthermore, a majority of Americans believe that Trump is prioritizing the deportation of non-dangerous individuals, such as high school students and small-business owners. The sentiment against Trump’s immigration policies extends to the use of detention facilities, with 58% opposing his methods according to the CBS News poll and 57% opposing the construction of new facilities in the CNN survey.
The decline in approval numbers presents an opportunity for Democrats, as more voters now consider immigration a key issue. This shift in public opinion highlights the potential for a new direction in immigration policy moving forward.
