Tsunami alerts triggered for Hawaii, Alaska after massive 8.0 quake strikes off Russia

The state of Hawaii is currently under a Tsunami Watch, while parts of Alaska are under a Tsunami Advisory following a powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake that struck off the east coast of Russia on Tuesday evening.

The earthquake occurred at 1:24 p.m. Hawaiian Time (7:24 p.m. ET, 2:24 a.m. Wednesday local time) approximately 85 miles east of Kamchatsky off the eastern Russian coast. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has indicated that a quake of this magnitude could potentially trigger a destructive tsunami in coastal areas far from the epicenter.

An investigation is underway to determine the extent of the tsunami threat to Hawaii. It is estimated that any waves generated by the earthquake could reach Hawaii around 7:17 p.m. HST. In Alaska, a Tsunami Advisory is in effect for the Aleutian Islands, indicating that some waves are likely but at a lower level of alert compared to a Tsunami Warning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also stated that waves are expected to reach Shemya at 4:46 p.m. Alaska Daylight time, and 5:46 p.m. AKDT in Adak. The level of tsunami danger for other US and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America is currently being evaluated, with further information to be provided in supplementary messages.

The situation is being closely monitored as authorities work to assess the potential impact of the earthquake and tsunami on the affected regions. Residents in Hawaii and Alaska are advised to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or safety precautions issued by local officials.
