The Tulsa Zoo has unveiled the first images of Billy and Tina, the elephants from the L.A. Zoo who were recently moved to their new home in Oklahoma.
Despite initial protests and backlash, Billy and Tina have safely arrived at the Tulsa Zoo, where they will spend the coming weeks adjusting to their new environment and forming relationships with their caretakers and fellow elephants.
The zoo’s Instagram post mentions that Billy and Tina will begin their stay in quarantine, which is essential for their social well-being and adjustment to the new surroundings.
The quarantine phase allows the elephants to observe and interact with other elephants from a distance, aiding in their acclimatization process. They won’t be accessible to the public immediately, with only occasional glimpses available.
Reports suggest that Billy and Tina showed excitement by trumpeting when they were introduced to their new living quarters at the Elephant Preserve Barn.
The journey to their new home involved a 26-hour road trip with regular breaks for food and water. The elephants remained calm throughout the journey, displaying a healthy appetite and staying hydrated.
Celebrities like Cher and others had petitioned L.A. Mayor Karen Bass to intervene in Billy and Tina’s relocation, but their efforts were unsuccessful as the elephants were moved discreetly in the early hours of the morning. Legal attempts to halt the transfer were also denied.
The elephants seem to be settling well in their new home, with their arrival prompting a positive response from both the animals and the staff at the Tulsa Zoo.
