Two Missouri deputies killed hours apart by fleeing suspect who was released days earlier from jail

Two Missouri deputies tragically lost their lives after a career criminal gunman opened fire on officers during a routine traffic stop and a subsequent manhunt, which ended in a shootout where the suspect was also killed.

The incident began when Richard Bird, 45, fatally shot Deputy Gabriel Ramirez during a traffic stop in Highlandville. Ramirez, just 30 years old, was found dead on the roadway, prompting a massive response from various law enforcement agencies including the FBI, US Marshals, and state troopers.

A blue alert was issued, and an intense manhunt ensued as authorities searched for Bird, who was quickly identified as the suspect. Bird’s abandoned truck was located several miles away from the scene, leading police to search the surrounding area. The suspect was eventually found in a wooded area after officers detected a heat signature.

During the confrontation, Bird began firing at officers, injuring Deputy Josh Wahl and Deputy Austin McCall. Tragically, Deputy Michael Hislope was fatally shot as officers attempted to rescue the wounded deputies. An armored vehicle was used to approach Bird, who continued to fire until he was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement.

Bird had a lengthy criminal history and was previously charged with second-degree burglary and receiving stolen property. Court records revealed that he had been found in possession of stolen collectible coins and documents that he had attempted to burn. Despite posting bail for his previous charges, Bird’s violent past caught up with him during the fatal shootout with deputies.

Deputy Ramirez and Deputy Hislope, who lost their lives in the line of duty, were both dedicated members of the Christian County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ramirez had joined the department in 2024, while Deputy Hislope had been serving since 2019. Their bravery and commitment to serving and protecting the community will never be forgotten.

Deputy Wahl and Deputy McCall, who were injured during the shootout, are both recovering from surgery and are now in stable condition. The tragic loss of two law enforcement officers in such a short period has deeply impacted the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and the entire community.

Sheriff Brad Cole expressed his sorrow over the loss of his deputies, emphasizing the courage and sacrifice they displayed in the line of duty. The community mourns the loss of these brave officers and honors their unwavering commitment to keeping Christian County safe.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the events that led to the fatal shootout. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and remains committed to upholding the legacy of Deputy Ramirez and Deputy Hislope.

With the tragic loss of two deputies and the heroic actions of law enforcement during the manhunt, the Christian County Sheriff’s Office faces a somber reminder of the dangers officers face every day in their mission to protect and serve.
