U.S., Canada May See Northern Lights Monday Due To Intense Geomagnetic Storm
Get ready to witness a spectacular display of the aurora borealis! According to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the northern lights could be visible across Canada and much of the northern U.S. states on Monday night following a major disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field.
Shawn Dahl, service coordinator at the center, highlighted the intense geomagnetic and solar radiation storms currently taking place. These storms not only create stunning northern lights but can also disrupt satellite operations, GPS communications, and other infrastructure, as noted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Dahl mentioned that the storm is not expected to weaken significantly until Tuesday.
Back in November, solar storms led to vibrant auroras in parts of Europe and even as far south as Kansas, Colorado, and Texas in the United States. These natural light shows are truly a sight to behold!
While solar radiation storms can impact objects in space and certain communication systems, astronauts at the international space station are currently not in danger. Dahl added that the intensity of this storm is unprecedented in over two decades, making it a truly remarkable event.
