U.S. cities will see big tourism boost from World Cup, analysis predicts
The 2026 World Cup is set to be a major economic boon for the United States, with 11 host cities expected to benefit from a surge in tourism spending. According to Tourism Economics, a global travel data provider, the tournament will draw 1.2 million international visitors, including spectators and their companions, team representatives, match officials, and more.
The tournament will kick off on June 12 in Los Angeles, with a total of 78 matches to be played across 11 U.S. cities. Additional games will be held in Mexico and Canada, culminating in the finals at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. The U.S. cities set to host matches include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle.
After a decline in international visitors in 2025, the U.S. is poised to see a 3.7% growth in visits next year, driven in part by the World Cup. Tourism Economics attributes this growth to a strong global interest in the tournament, despite challenges faced by the international travel industry.
A report from FIFA and the World Trade Organization predicts that the influx of visitors to host cities will generate billions of dollars in economic activity, benefiting the hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors. Hotels in hosting cities are preparing for record occupancy rates, while local businesses are expected to see increased foot traffic. The World Cup also provides an opportunity to promote host cities as global tourist destinations, enhancing their visibility and appeal to international travelers.
International travelers are expected to stay in the U.S. for an average of 12 days, attend two matches on average, and spend over $400 per day during their visit.
Overall, the 2026 World Cup promises to be a significant economic driver for the U.S., boosting tourism in host cities and providing a platform for showcasing the country as a premier destination for international visitors.
