U.S.-German Citizen Is Charged With Trying To Attack U.S. Embassy In Tel Aviv

A U.S.-German citizen, Joseph Neumeyer, was arrested for attempting to firebomb the branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, officials revealed on Sunday.

Neumeyer approached the embassy on May 19 with Molotov cocktails in his backpack but was stopped by a guard. He fled the scene, dropping his backpack in the process.

Law enforcement located Neumeyer at a nearby hotel and apprehended him. A criminal complaint was filed in the Eastern District of New York.

The incident occurred amid Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, now in its 19th month.

Neumeyer, 28, originally from Colorado with dual citizenship, had traveled from the U.S. to Canada before arriving in Israel. He had posted threatening messages on social media prior to the attack.

Israeli authorities deported Neumeyer to New York, where he appeared before a federal judge in Brooklyn. His court-appointed attorney declined to comment.

President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed city was referenced during the incident.
