UK airline Eastern Airways suspends operations in face of collapse

Eastern Airways Suspends Operations, Faces Collapse

Eastern Airways, a UK regional carrier based at Humberside Airport in North Lincolnshire, has suspended all operations and is on the verge of collapse, jeopardizing hundreds of jobs in Britain and Europe. The airline has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, providing temporary protection from creditors as it explores rescue options or prepares for insolvency proceedings.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed the cancellation of all Eastern Airways flights and advised passengers not to go to airports for their scheduled trips. Alternative transport options, including free standard-class travel from certain rail companies, are being offered to affected passengers and staff.

Passengers who booked directly with Eastern Airways are encouraged to contact their credit or debit card issuers for chargebacks on canceled flights. Airport departure boards displayed numerous cancellations, affecting routes across the UK.

Scottish airline Loganair has offered discounted airfares to stranded passengers on select routes. Eastern Airways, established in 1997, operated regional flights within the UK, Ireland, and Europe, including vital services supported by the Scottish government.

The airline’s network encompassed various destinations and played a crucial role in the North Sea oil and gas industry. Financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with reduced passenger demand and escalating operational costs, have contributed to Eastern Airways’ current predicament.
