UK opposition leaders demand activist be stripped of citizenship for past tweets

LONDON — Opposition leaders in the United Kingdom are calling for the removal of citizenship from a human rights activist due to past social media posts containing violent and antisemitic language. The activist, Alaa Abd el-Fattah, recently returned to Britain after spending years in Egyptian prisons.

Leaders of the Conservative and Reform parties are urging for Abd el-Fattah’s deportation following the emergence of tweets from over a decade ago where he allegedly supported the killing of “Zionists” and police.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch expressed her disgust over the comments made by Abd el-Fattah on social media, describing them as abhorrent. Abd el-Fattah has since apologized for the tweets, stating that some were taken out of context.

Having spent years in Egyptian prisons for various charges, including spreading fake news, Abd el-Fattah returned to the UK after a travel ban was lifted by Egyptian authorities. However, his return has been marred by controversy surrounding his past social media posts.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s welcoming remarks about Abd el-Fattah’s return led to the resurfacing of old tweets that were deemed offensive. Abd el-Fattah expressed surprise at the backlash and issued a statement apologizing for the content of his past tweets.

Despite his apology, political figures like Nigel Farage have condemned Abd el-Fattah’s views as incompatible with British values. Farage called for the activist to be barred from the UK due to his racist and anti-British sentiments.

The debate continues as to whether Abd el-Fattah should be allowed to retain his citizenship in light of his controversial social media posts.
