UK police say 2 victims have died and 3 others are in serious condition after synagogue attack
LONDON — Tragedy struck a synagogue in northern England on the holiest day of the Jewish year as two individuals lost their lives and three others sustained serious injuries, according to authorities.
The suspect, who is believed to be deceased after being shot by law enforcement, was reportedly carrying an explosive device, leading to a cautious approach by the Greater Manchester Police. A bomb disposal team was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.
The incident unfolded during Yom Kippur, a solemn day of atonement and reflection observed by the Jewish community.
Reports indicate that the police received a distress call from a member of the public who witnessed a vehicle heading towards a crowd outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall. The caller also mentioned a stabbing incident.
Law enforcement officers swiftly intervened, with shots being fired at the suspect shortly after the initial report.
“The suspected offender has been neutralized,” stated the Greater Manchester Police in an official statement.
Initially, four individuals were reported to have sustained injuries from the vehicular and stabbing incidents. However, this number was later updated to five victims.
The authorities invoked the national code-word “Plato,” indicating a potential terror threat. However, the incident has not been officially classified as an act of terrorism.
Expressing his shock and condemnation, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced heightened security measures at synagogues nationwide. He cut short his European summit participation to oversee emergency response efforts.
“The timing of this attack on Yom Kippur, a sacred day for the Jewish community, adds to the gravity of the situation,” Starmer emphasized.
Yom Kippur, known as the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, is marked by solemn prayers and reflection in synagogues across the United Kingdom.
Security measures are consistently enforced during major Jewish festivals, ensuring the safety of worshippers and community members, stated Dave Rich of the Community Security Trust.
Manchester, previously scarred by the tragic 2017 Ariana Grande concert bombing that claimed 22 lives, now faces another somber chapter in its history.
