UK synagogue stabbing: 2 victims killed, 3 hurt; suspect believed dead
A tragic incident unfolded in Manchester on Thursday when a man drove a vehicle into a crowd and launched a stabbing attack near a synagogue, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals. The police reported that a third person, believed to be the offender, was shot by officers and is also presumed dead. However, confirmation of the suspect’s death is pending due to safety concerns regarding suspicious items on his person, necessitating the presence of a bomb disposal unit at the scene.
Three other individuals sustained serious injuries in the attack, which took place outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in a northern suburb of the city. The police noted that injuries were caused by both the vehicle and stab wounds, with eyewitnesses recounting seeing a car being driven toward members of the public and a man being stabbed.
The authorities declared a major incident and a “PLATO” designation, indicating that the incident was being treated as a potential marauding terrorist attack. This unfortunate event occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, adding to the gravity of the situation.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his shock and horror at the attack, especially given the significance of the day. He extended his sympathies to the affected individuals and praised the emergency services for their swift response. Additional police presence was promised at synagogues nationwide to ensure the safety of the Jewish community.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan also condemned the violence and announced increased police patrols in Jewish communities and synagogues across London. The royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, expressed their deep sadness at the incident and commended the emergency services for their rapid intervention.
The Israeli Embassy in the U.K. denounced the attack, describing it as abhorrent and distressing, particularly occurring on such a sacred day in a place of worship. The people of Israel offered their thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, and the entire Jewish community during this challenging time.
In response to this tragic event, Prime Minister Starmer cut short his trip to Denmark and announced plans to chair an emergency “COBRA” meeting with senior officials to address the national crisis. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
