Ukraine cabinet building hit in largest Russian strike of war, Zelenskyy says
The recent drone and missile attack by Russia on Ukraine’s cabinet building in Kyiv has escalated tensions and caused devastation in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that this was the largest attack of its kind, with 810 drones and 13 missiles launched, resulting in significant damage and loss of life.
The Ukrainian air force reported that they were able to intercept and shoot down a majority of the drones and missiles, but the impact was still felt across 33 locations in Ukraine. The attack claimed the lives of at least three people in Kyiv, with additional casualties reported in other regions such as Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, and Odesa.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressed her gratitude to the rescue personnel who worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire at the cabinet building. She vowed to restore the damaged structures but emphasized that the loss of lives cannot be undone. Both the prime minister and president called for immediate international intervention and increased military support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing hostilities.
President Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a deliberate crime and urged for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. He emphasized the need for all parties to honor the agreements made in recent meetings, including those in Paris with European leaders and virtual discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The repercussions of the attack were felt beyond Ukraine’s borders, prompting NATO fighter jets in Poland to scramble in response. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 69 Ukrainian drones during the assault, but debris from one drone caused a fire at an oil refinery in Russia. Several individuals were injured in different regions due to the falling debris and damage caused by the attack.
