Ukrainian drones attack Moscow, Russia says, as Zelenskyy says Kyiv ready for deal

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has once again taken center stage as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism about reaching a final agreement with the United States to end the war. Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to backing a peace deal, stating that his country has never been a hindrance to achieving peace.

Despite efforts to negotiate a resolution, Ukraine and Russia continued their exchange of long-range drones, with Russia claiming to have downed at least 195 Ukrainian drones overnight. Flight restrictions were implemented at several Russian airports in response to the attacks.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 116 drones into the country, with 60 being shot down or suppressed. Zelenskyy revealed that repair crews were working tirelessly to restore power following a major Russian drone and missile strike. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Ukrainians have electricity for Christmas, despite Russian attempts to disrupt the holiday.

During a briefing in Kyiv, Zelenskyy disclosed details of a 20-point peace plan negotiated with the U.S. that is currently under review by Moscow. He expressed optimism about finalizing the documents and anticipated a response from Russia soon.

The proposed peace framework includes security guarantees from the U.S., NATO, and European partners, with plans for a presidential election in Ukraine following the signing of any agreement. Zelenskyy highlighted the inclusion of Article-5-style security guarantees in case of future Russian aggression, regardless of Ukrainian NATO membership.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been updated on recent U.S. contacts and intends to formulate a response based on the information received. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted significant similarities in positions between Moscow and Washington regarding a potential settlement.

As efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine continue, both sides remain cautiously optimistic about the prospect of reaching a lasting peace agreement. The international community closely monitors developments in the region as negotiations progress towards a resolution.
