UN Says Trump Escalator Problem Likely Caused by Safety Trigger

The incident that occurred at the United Nations headquarters in New York City involving the escalator malfunction as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were arriving at the U.N. The U.N. Secretary General’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, mentioned that the U.S. delegation’s videographer may have unintentionally triggered the safety function by traveling backward up the escalator to capture Trump’s arrival. This led to the built-in safety mechanism on the comb step being activated at the top of the escalator, causing it to stop to prevent any accidents.

Fortunately, a technician was able to quickly restore the escalator after the U.S. delegation had climbed up to the second floor. However, the escalator malfunction was not the only issue that day. President Trump also mentioned that the teleprompter was not functioning during his speech at the General Assembly. Despite these technical difficulties, Trump delivered his speech without the aid of a teleprompter, jokingly stating that speaking from the heart was just as effective.

In response to the incident, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called for an investigation into the escalator and teleprompter malfunctions, suggesting that they may have been acts of sabotage. Leavitt urged the U.N. to hold accountable any staffers who intentionally caused the escalator malfunction while Trump and the first lady were stepping on it.

The U.N. has yet to respond to requests for comment on the incident. However, Leavitt remains adamant that there should be consequences for any deliberate actions taken to disrupt the President’s visit to the U.N. headquarters. The investigation into the escalator and teleprompter malfunctions is ongoing, with the U.S. Secret Service looking into the matter.
