United, American suspend some flights from U.S. to Middle East amid Israel-Iran conflict
Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, several airlines have decided to suspend flights between the United States and the Middle East. United Airlines announced that it will temporarily pause its daily flights between Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Dubai due to the conflict in the region. The airline did not specify when flights between the two destinations would resume, as they only operate through Newark Airport.
Similarly, American Airlines has also decided to suspend flights between Philadelphia International Airport and Doha, Qatar. This suspension is expected to last until June 22, with the last flight departing from Philadelphia to Doha early Thursday morning before the suspension took effect.
Delta Air Lines has also joined in the suspension of flights, announcing the temporary halt of flights between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Tel Aviv, Israel. This suspension is currently scheduled to last until August 31.
The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion” against Iran, targeting nuclear and military facilities. In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes. As a result, airspace over Israel, Jordan, Iran, and Iraq has been closed, with Israel’s Ministry of Transportation stating that it will remain closed until further notice.
President Trump has demanded Iran’s unconditional surrender and is considering joining Israel’s air campaign against Iran. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem has informed U.S. citizens in Israel of plans to assist with their departure, with some being evacuated on cruise ships.
The State Department has issued a Level 4 travel advisory for Israel, warning Americans not to travel there due to armed conflict, terrorism, and civil unrest. Similarly, Iran has a “Do Not Travel” advisory due to the risk of terrorism, civil unrest, and arbitrary arrest of U.S. citizens.
As the situation continues to unfold, airlines are taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members. It is essential for travelers to stay informed about any updates and changes to flight schedules in the region.
