Univision Goes Dark on YouTube TV
Google’s YouTube TV has made the decision to drop Univision’s local TV stations and other TelevisaUnivision-owned networks after failing to reach a contract renewal agreement on Tuesday. This move has left many subscribers without access to popular Spanish-language programming.
In response to the blackout of TelevisaUnivision’s channels on YouTube TV, the streaming service has promised a $6 credit or refund to Spanish Base subscribers if the content remains unavailable for an extended period of time. This gesture aims to appease customers who may be missing out on their favorite shows and sports events.
Apart from the Univision stations, YouTube TV has also removed channels like UniMas, TUDN, Galavision, and others from its lineup. This has resulted in DVR recordings of TelevisaUnivision programming being deleted as well, much to the disappointment of viewers.
A YouTube spokesperson explained that while TelevisaUnivision has a massive following on YouTube generating ad revenue, their presence on YouTube TV is minimal. This discrepancy in consumption led to the breakdown in negotiations, ultimately resulting in the removal of their content from the platform.
On the other hand, TelevisaUnivision expressed disappointment in Google’s decision to drop Univision during Hispanic Heritage Month. They criticized YouTube TV for disregarding the importance of Spanish-language content to millions of viewers and urged them to reconsider their stance.
The disagreement between Google and TelevisaUnivision has caught the attention of lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who condemned the move as an abuse of power. Cruz highlighted the impact on Hispanic viewers who may now have to pay extra to access Univision and Telemundo content on YouTube TV.
As the negotiations continue between the two parties, subscribers are left in limbo, unsure of when or if they will regain access to TelevisaUnivision’s programming. The outcome of these talks will determine the future of Spanish-language content on YouTube TV and the options available to viewers moving forward.
