US and Mideast countries seek Kyiv’s drone expertise as Russia-Ukraine talks put on ice

KYIV, Ukraine — The United States, along with its allies in the Middle East, are actively seeking Ukraine’s expertise in combating Iran’s Shahed drones, as stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy revealed that several countries, including the United States, have reached out to Ukraine for assistance in defending against Iranian drones. He recently engaged in discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait regarding potential collaboration.

Since Russia’s invasion over four years ago, Ukraine has faced tens of thousands of Shahed drones launched by Russia. In response, Ukraine developed cost-effective drone killers that have garnered international attention.

Ukraine’s innovative approach to countering drones has prompted interest from European countries, with Poland notably responding to airspace violations with high-value military assets. These developments have underscored the evolving nature of air defense strategies.

Zelenskyy emphasized that any assistance provided by Ukraine in countering Iranian drones must not compromise its own defenses and should support diplomatic efforts to end the Russian invasion. The European Union and Gulf countries are exploring how Ukraine’s experience can aid in addressing the drone threat posed by Iran.

The ongoing Iran war has diverted global attention from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the postponement of scheduled U.S.-brokered talks. Despite international efforts, the Russia-Ukraine war shows no signs of abating, with casualties mounting and peace initiatives yielding limited results.

As prisoner exchanges remain a focal point of negotiations, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the repatriation of Ukrainian prisoners from Russia. However, challenges persist as Russia continues its military campaign while evading additional sanctions.

Amidst these complex geopolitical dynamics, Ukraine has managed to push back Russian forces at certain points along the front line, reclaiming territory lost earlier in the conflict. The strategic gains made by Ukrainian forces underscore their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
