US designates Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’ after Trump threat over alleged attacks on Christians
The State Department has officially updated its designation for Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for its alleged severe violations of religious freedom and persecution of Christians. This move comes after President Donald Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from violence and instructed the Pentagon to prepare for possible action in Nigeria.
The CPC label is given to nations engaged in severe violations of religious freedom under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. While largely symbolic, U.S. law requires targeted responses to violations of religious freedom in designated countries.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken removed Nigeria from the CPC list in 2021, but Trump reinstated the designation in response to ongoing concerns about religious persecution. Other countries designated as CPCs include Burma, China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and others.
Congress will investigate the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, with Rep. Riley Moore leading the effort. Recent reports suggest that thousands of Christians have been killed in Nigeria, with extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa responsible for attacks on churches and communities.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pushed back against claims of religious intolerance in Nigeria, stating that the government is committed to safeguarding freedom of religion for all citizens. However, international reports indicate ongoing violence affecting both Christians and Muslims in the region.
Trump has threatened to cut U.S. aid to Nigeria in response to the religious freedom violations. Despite recent contributions for food assistance and nutrition support, the future of U.S. aid to Nigeria remains uncertain.
Rapper Nicki Minaj expressed gratitude for Trump’s attention to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom and respect for all beliefs. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz thanked Minaj for speaking out and invited her to learn more about efforts to protect persecuted Christians globally.
In conclusion, the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern highlights ongoing concerns about religious freedom and persecution in the country. International scrutiny and calls for action underscore the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the rights and safety of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.
