US strikes 2nd alleged drug cartel vessel in Pacific, in expansion of attacks

The United States military has conducted yet another airstrike on an alleged drug cartel vessel in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This recent strike marks the second vessel to be targeted in as many days, as announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on social media. The attack, which took place in international waters, resulted in the deaths of three individuals who were believed to be transporting narcotics.

Hegseth described the individuals targeted as “narco-terrorists” who are responsible for bringing death and destruction to cities. This latest strike adds to a series of similar operations, with a total of 37 individuals being killed in nine known U.S. strikes on alleged drug boats since early September. Two survivors from previous strikes were returned to their home countries of Ecuador and Colombia.

The Defense Secretary referred to the drug cartels as the “al Qaeda of our hemisphere” and emphasized that they will not escape justice. The U.S. military’s actions have been focused on disrupting drug trafficking activities in the region, with previous strikes taking place in the Caribbean Sea. President Donald Trump praised the operation for reducing the number of drug boats attempting to enter the U.S., noting that smugglers may now resort to land routes for their illicit activities.

The use of lethal military force against alleged drug smugglers has sparked legal debates, as past administrations typically relied on law enforcement agencies for interdiction efforts. The Trump administration has defended the airstrikes as part of a larger strategy to combat drug cartels, labeling it as a “war” against these criminal organizations. Trump highlighted the effectiveness of military action against speedboat-equipped smugglers, emphasizing the superiority of missiles in intercepting these vessels.

As the U.S. continues to target drug trafficking operations at sea, the implications of using military force in such operations remain a topic of discussion. The administration’s aggressive approach to combating drug cartels reflects a shift towards more direct and forceful tactics in addressing organized crime networks.
