US-Ukraine talks on security ‘framework’ to continue Saturday, State Department says

The State Department announced that American and Ukrainian officials will be continuing discussions on a potential peace deal to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This comes after productive meetings between the two teams in Miami earlier this week.

According to a statement from the State Department, President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner had constructive talks with the Ukrainian delegation on advancing a credible pathway towards a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. The parties agreed on a framework for security arrangements and deterrence capabilities that are essential for achieving lasting peace in the region.

While the statement did not provide specific details on the security arrangement framework, it emphasized the importance of securing Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty while ensuring the safety of its citizens and laying a foundation for a prosperous democratic future.

The Ukrainian delegation, led by Rustem Umerov, reiterated that Ukraine’s priority is to secure a settlement that protects its sovereignty and independence. The U.S. envoys also discussed their recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and explored steps that could lead to ending the conflict.

Both parties acknowledged that real progress towards a peace agreement depends on Russia’s commitment to long-term peace, including steps towards de-escalation and cessation of hostilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his readiness to work constructively with partners to achieve a dignified peace that provides real security for the region.

Despite the ongoing talks, the Kremlin continues to maintain maximalist demands, including Ukraine’s withdrawal from territories in the east of the country. Ukraine has rejected this proposal, emphasizing the need for concrete security guarantees from Western partners.

As discussions continue, both Russia and Ukraine are sustaining their military campaigns, with reports of drone and missile attacks from both sides. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles into the country, with many being intercepted or shot down. In response, Russia claimed to have downed Ukrainian drones in return.

Overall, the negotiations between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia are crucial in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and ensuring the security and stability of the region. The parties will reconvene in the coming days to further advance the discussions and work towards a lasting peace agreement.
