US won’t abandon the Philippines in fighting China at sea, Manila’s envoy says
In a recent statement, Manila’s top envoy to Washington expressed optimism that the United States will continue to support the Philippines in its efforts to combat Beijing’s assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea. This comes as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping explore direct talks to address their differences.
Jose Manuel Romualdez, the Philippine Ambassador to Washington, welcomed the renewed dialogue between the U.S. and Chinese leaders and emphasized the importance of refining the Philippines’ relationship with Beijing to facilitate increased trade opportunities. Despite this, Romualdez affirmed that the Philippines will remain resolute in safeguarding its territorial interests in the South China Sea, which China claims in its entirety.
The U.S. and the Philippines have been vocal critics of China’s escalating assertiveness in the region, particularly in light of recent incidents involving Chinese forces engaging in aggressive tactics against Filipino forces at sea and in the air. The U.S. has consistently warned China of its obligation to defend the Philippines in the event of an armed attack.
Despite these tensions, Romualdez expressed concerns that a potential reconciliation between the U.S. and China could marginalize the Philippines. He highlighted upcoming visits between Trump and Xi as potential opportunities for diplomatic progress but underscored the need for assurances that the Philippines will not be sidelined in the process.
Romualdez also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance U.S.-Philippine defense engagements, including plans for financial assistance to modernize the Philippine military’s capabilities. Last year, joint military drills between American and Filipino forces showcased their commitment to security cooperation in the region.
Looking ahead, Romualdez emphasized the importance of improving relations with China on non-contentious issues such as climate change and energy alternatives. He acknowledged the inevitability of change and the need for adaptability in navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
As diplomatic developments unfold, the Philippines remains focused on protecting its interests while seeking opportunities for constructive engagement with regional partners.
