Verizon says outage resolved after customers across the U.S. lost service for hours
Verizon has successfully resolved an outage that left customers across the U.S. experiencing service disruptions, with many reporting that their devices were limited to SOS mode starting around noon Eastern Time. The telecommunications company announced on Wednesday night that the issue had been resolved and advised customers to restart their devices to reconnect to the network.
In a statement released at around 10:30 PM ET, Verizon assured customers that they would receive account credits for any inconvenience caused by the outage. Specific details regarding the account credits would be communicated directly to affected customers. The company acknowledged the impact on wireless voice and data services for some customers, with more than 180,000 users reporting outages at one point, according to Downdetector.
Outages were reported from coast to coast, with complaints pouring in from New York to California. While some T-Mobile users also reported issues, a T-Mobile spokesperson confirmed that their network was operating normally. However, due to Verizon’s outage, T-Mobile customers may have experienced difficulties reaching individuals with Verizon service during this time.
The outage even affected emergency services, with New York City Emergency Management warning that users trying to call 911 may have experienced difficulties. In response, NYCEM advised individuals facing emergencies and unable to connect using their Verizon Wireless devices to utilize a device from another carrier, a landline, or visit a police precinct or fire station to report the emergency.
During the outage, Verizon customers found their phones in SOS mode, a feature that allows the device to make emergency calls, such as 911, by connecting to other carriers when experiencing network connectivity issues. This marks the second time in recent years that Verizon has faced a similar outage, with incidents reported in August 2025 and October 2024.
