Verizon Resolves Major Service Outage Impacting Thousands of Customers

Verizon announced late Wednesday night that a significant service outage affecting thousands of customers had been resolved after hours of disruption. The outage, which prevented some local 911 calls from going through, prompted the company to work diligently to restore service.

A company spokesperson stated, “The outage has been resolved. If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network.” Earlier, Verizon had expressed its commitment to work through the night to address the service interruption.

In response to the outage, Verizon announced that it would provide “account credits” for those affected by the disruption. Downdetector, a platform that tracks outages, reported that Verizon customers first experienced interrupted service around noon Eastern time on Wednesday.

Many Verizon customers took to social media to report that their phones displayed “SOS” instead of network bars during the outage. At its peak, Downdetector indicated that at least 178,284 Verizon customers were impacted, with the highest concentration of reports coming from New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Houston. By late afternoon, the number of affected customers had decreased to less than 60,000.

In a social media update, Verizon acknowledged the issue and stated that a team was actively working to resolve the service problem. New York Emergency Management officials confirmed that the outage was affecting some users attempting to call 911.

While there were concerns about a possible cyberattack causing the outage, law enforcement sources indicated that it was likely a technical issue rather than a deliberate attack. The federal government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency directed inquiries to Verizon for further information.
