Veteran LAPD sergeant killed in line of duty while responding to late-night crash
A tragic incident occurred on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles, resulting in the loss of a beloved Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, Shiou Deng. Deng, a dedicated officer with nearly 30 years of service, was responding to a late-night crash on the freeway when he was struck by a passing car. The 53-year-old sergeant had just activated his emergency lights and stepped out of his patrol car when the tragic accident occurred.
Despite being rushed to UCLA Medical Center, Sergeant Deng succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving department and community. Police Chief Jim McDonnell praised Deng as a hero who put the safety of others before his own, embodying the spirit of service and sacrifice that defines law enforcement.
The fatal wreck, captured in grisly videos, showed Deng’s mangled police cruiser alongside a heavily damaged pickup truck. Tragically, the driver of the pickup truck that Deng had stopped to assist also lost their life in the collision, while another individual sustained injuries.
Chief McDonnell fondly remembered Deng as an exceptional individual and a true leader, known for his compassionate and dedicated service to the community. Deng’s commitment to his family, friends, and colleagues was evident in his caring nature and willingness to help others. As a caretaker for his elderly parents, Deng’s kindness and sense of humor endeared him to those around him.
Having been promoted to the rank of sergeant two years prior, Deng had a long and impactful career within the LAPD, including 17 years in the emotional evaluation unit. His recent assignment to the West LA division highlighted his continued dedication to serving the city and its residents.
A somber procession honored Sergeant Deng as firefighters saluted his body during the transport from the hospital to the coroner’s office. The city mourned the loss of a dedicated officer, with Mayor Karen Bass ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff in tribute to Deng’s service and sacrifice.
