Viola Davis to Receive Chairman’s Award at NAACP Image Awards

Viola Davis, the accomplished EGOT winner, is set to be honored with the prestigious Chairman’s Award at this year’s NAACP Image Awards. With a remarkable career that has earned her nine NAACP Image Awards for outstanding performances in various films and TV series, including “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Fences,” and “The Help,” as well as for her memoir “Finding Me,” Davis continues to captivate audiences with her powerful and transcending performances.

The Chairman’s Award recognizes individuals who excel in public service and use their platforms to drive meaningful change, and Davis is being specifically acknowledged for her impactful work both on and off camera. In addition to her contributions to the entertainment industry, Davis has been actively involved in social justice issues, partnering with programs to combat childhood hunger and recently launching the Davis-Tennon Foundation.

Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors, praised Davis for her commitment to driving change and creating opportunities for equity. He highlighted her courage and excellence in crafting a legacy that will inspire future generations. Davis has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Cecil B. DeMille honor at the Golden Globes, induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame, and an honorary doctorate from the American Film Institute.

Past recipients of the Chairman’s Award include Vice President Kamala Harris, Amanda Gorman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ruby Dee, among others. The award ceremony will be broadcast live on BET and CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 28. In addition to honoring Davis, special awards will be presented to A$AP Rocky for the Vanguard Award for fashion and Rev. Dr. Jamal-Harrison Bryant for the Mildred Bond Roxborough Social Justice Impact Award.

Davis’s dedication to using her platform for the greater good has not gone unnoticed. Connie Orlando, executive VP of specials, music programming & music strategy at BET, commended Davis for her artistic achievements and commitment to public service. The Chairman’s Award acknowledges Davis’s enduring legacy of excellence in entertainment and advocacy for social causes.
