Vogue taps Chloe Malle to succeed Anna Wintour as head of the U.S. fashion magazine
Chloe Malle has been appointed by Vogue to lead its U.S. editorial content, taking over from the legendary Anna Wintour who has been at the helm of the magazine for over three decades. The 39-year-old Malle, daughter of actor Candice Bergen and the late French director Louis Malle, has been with Vogue for 14 years and currently holds the position of editor of Vogue.com and co-host of The Run-Through podcast.
In a statement posted on Vogue.com, Wintour expressed her excitement about Malle’s new role, stating, “I’m thrilled to announce that Chloe Malle will be the next Head of Editorial Content for our U.S. title, leading the American magazine and guiding its digital coverage.” Wintour, a prominent figure in the fashion industry, announced in June that she would be stepping back from her editorial duties, passing the torch to Malle.
While Malle will be taking over day-to-day operations at the U.S. edition of Vogue, she will still report to Wintour. In her online post, Wintour mentioned that she is looking forward to continuing to work with Malle both as her mentor and her student. The transition signifies a new chapter for Vogue as it navigates the rapidly evolving worlds of fashion and media.
Malle’s appointment comes after Wintour announced plans to recruit a new head of editorial content for Vogue. Speculation had been rife about potential candidates, with names like Eva Chen, Nicole Phelps, and Sara Moonves being circulated. Ultimately, Wintour chose Malle, citing her success in doubling Vogue.com’s traffic in just two years. Malle’s journey at Vogue began in 2011 as a social editor, before transitioning to contributing editor in 2016 and eventually taking on the role of editor of Vogue.com in 2023.
Vogue, founded 134 years ago as a society journal, has a rich history of notable editors. Wintour’s predecessors include Diana Vreeland and Grace Mirabella, who have left their mark on the iconic fashion publication. As Wintour steps into her new role as global editorial director and chief content officer for Condé Nast, Malle is poised to lead Vogue into its next chapter.
