‘Vote him out!’: Town hall erupts in anger at Nebraska GOP congressman over Trump megabill, policies
House Republican Rep. Mike Flood faced a contentious crowd during a lively town hall in Lincoln, Nebraska on Monday night. The atmosphere quickly turned hostile as the audience erupted in shouts and heckles while Flood discussed President Donald Trump’s significant policy and tax bill, signed into law in July.
Flood estimated that there were approximately 750 attendees at the event held at Kimball Hall. Despite his attempts to address the crowd, he was frequently interrupted by the vocal audience.
“I know this may not be well-received, but I want to take this opportunity to discuss the healthcare aspects of the recent bill we passed. There has been a lot of misinformation circulating, and I want to clarify some key points,” Flood stated, triggering loud boos from the crowd.
As Flood tried to explain the health care provisions of the bill, he struggled to be heard over the noise of the audience. He emphasized that he wanted to represent the interests of the constituents but was met with resistance.
One of the main topics that incited anger among the audience was the impact of the bill on Medicaid. Flood posed a question to the crowd, asking whether individuals who are capable of working but choose not to should receive free healthcare. This question was met with disapproval from the audience, reflecting their disagreement with Flood’s stance.
Flood defended the changes to Medicaid, stating that they did not affect individuals who are disabled, elderly, pregnant, or vulnerable. When challenged by an audience member about taking away healthcare from Nebraskans, Flood dismissed the concerns by emphasizing the importance of supporting infrastructure and ensuring that healthcare is not provided for those who are able to work.
As the discussion shifted to tax provisions of the bill, audience members chanted “Tax the Rich! Tax the Rich! Tax the Rich!” in response to Flood’s comments. Flood argued against taxing the wealthy, stating that it would hinder job and business creation.
Despite facing strong opposition from the crowd, Flood maintained his support for the bill, emphasizing that it was a middle-class tax cut. He acknowledged that the bill was not perfect but defended his decision to vote in favor of it.
Throughout the town hall, Flood fielded questions on various issues, but the audience’s dissatisfaction was evident as they chanted “vote him out!” as the event drew to a close. Despite the challenging environment, Flood remained steadfast in his position and engaged with constituents on important policy matters.
